💡 Pro tip: To pass fees to your client, use the formula: Charge = (Amount + Fixed Fee) / (1 − Percentage). Always disclose processing fees upfront in your invoices.

How Stripe and PayPal fees are calculated

Card processors charge a percentage of each payment plus a fixed fee per transaction. Standard US online pricing is 2.9% + $0.30 for Stripe and 3.49% + $0.49 for PayPal checkout; international cards and currency conversion add extra percentage points.

Formula

Fee = Amount x Percentage + Fixed fee
You receive = Amount - Fee
To receive X, charge = (X + Fixed fee) / (1 - Percentage)

Example

On a $100 Stripe payment: $100 x 2.9% + $0.30 = $3.20 fee, so you receive $96.80. To receive exactly $100, charge ($100 + $0.30) / 0.971 = about $103.30.
